Venlo’s indomitable gas-holder.

The month ended typically: ‘the strip had become somewhat muddy and the aircraft were moved to another field in the afternoon’. But we had tried; we had flown 114 sorties and flown fifty-nine hours, with just five shoots. We had occupied nine landing-grounds, mostly made usable with our own hands – laying strips of grass together, removing wire fences and posts, filling in ditches and chopping down poplar trees (we tried explosive charges but it did not always work – and anyway it looked untidy).

December began (typically) with another move that brought us to within a few miles of Blerick, the last German position west of the Xaas. It was due for the chop. It was however, protected by a 600-yard belt of barbed wire, mines, an anti-tank ditch and another deep minefield, then a network of trenches. There was, therefore, to be a set-piece attack, by the indefatigable 15th Scottish, preceded by the specialised fortress-busting tackle and vehicles operated by 79th Armoured Division. (This was Operation. ‘Guildford’). Our job, once more, was spotting enemy batteries, or anything else that could be troublesome. The combination of the armoured ‘funnies’ and the Scots proved overwhelming, and Blerick was almost painlessly eliminated by nightfall on 3 December.
